How does the therapy work in practice
Llama Therapy is a tharapy which is not feeling like that, because you can be together with amazing animals…
an alternative, supportive therapy that helps improve and develop resources and improve quality of life for a variety of diagnoses and problems. You do not need a doctor’s prescription.
Animal-assisted work and therapy with llamas is new in Denmark, it differs from horse / dog therapy. Llama Therapy is more like Dolphin Therapy. In many European countries llamas are also known as the “dolphins of the pasture”.
Before beginning any llama-assisted treatment course, I have a detailed anamnesis interview with the client, where we agree on both the goals of the treatment and the number of sessions / meetings. Then, I plan each session individually according to the goals agreed on give a detailed evaluation afterwards.
Throughout the course, which is tailored to the needs of each client, we work together with the llamas, that help to strengthen your resources and resolve the issues / situations that are currently affecting your life.
What happens during the treatment sessions depends on the needs of each client and the purpose of the treatment.
It does not mean that you take a tour with the animal every time. There are many different ways to work with and around the animal, such as being with the llama in the barn, feeding and grooming it, or getting active in various ways.
Llamas are very reserved animals that only “thaw” when they feel safe, which means they demand nothing but attention and patience. They are animals that keep their distance and normally only approach people out of their own free will. They do not like being annoyed.
They are just there, mirroring “you” as you are during therapy. You will get the feedback through the animal in everything that you do and that helps to get things into perspective, to relax and to let go of everything that “annoys” you. The animal pays attention to you and whatever you do and remembers you incredibly well, which helps you to go the way.
Animals do not rate and challenge, they simply accept, which in turn means that pressure and stress are diminished and the therapeutic / pedagogical path is taken in small steps at its own pace.
It’s easier to do something when there’s an animal that does not say or ask for anything unlike people who always have some kind of good advice or demands. This especially helps people who have had bad experiences very often.
In addition, llamas are very soft, with big eyes and very long eyelashes, they are very friendly, kind and curious, which makes it easier to work with yourself …
At the same time, the session with the animal is relaxing and soothing, strengthens your attention, devotion, love and respect for yourself!
Animals do not assess, they are indifferent to trends, fashion and modern life. They are not interested in what clothes you wear or what you look like. This is a very important basis to get on well, especially for people who have had a hard time.
For example, it is possible to work with disabled people, with people who need to find their way back to life, after a long illness or who are very stressed. I have been working with people suffering from dementia, Parkinson’s, undergoing rehab after a stroke and multi-handicapped people.
Children and adolescents suffering from exam or school anxiety can thus be treated successfully. It is possible to alleviate and reduce psychological problems coming from traumatic expériences.
